Somali Pirates: Africans divided on the subject

E-mail Print PDF

Today Somalian pirates hijacked a second American ship, making it the 5th vessel since the beginning of this week. The crew is made of Italian and American citizens.

"The world is suddenly coming to realize that this is an imminent threat" says Abdul Karim, a refugee from Somalia currently living in the USA.

Africa Matata is conducting a poll on the website to find out the African opinion about this increasing problem.

This is only the preliminary of opinions that we collected via telephone:

Dauda from Mauritania says:"There is no evidence that the pirates are bad people. They did not hurt anyone so far. They have no problem with the crew members, treat them fairly. They have a problem with the West! We need to blame the one selling weapons to these people."

Angadef from Senegal says:"Africa needs to be involved. America cannot solve everything with weapons and armies. We need to sit with the elders from Somalia, solve this peacefully"

Aisatu from Liberia says:"I don't know if I should blame them or support them! As a mother, I worry for these young men. It is a very dangerous job"

Jean-Pierre Kasongo, a 'born again' says that piracy is a sin.

Africa Matata invite all Africans to express themselves by voting on the website 'africamata.com' and a special edition will be released to publish the results.
